Frequently asked questions about the UTM generator
What is a UTM generator?
A UTM generator is a tool that adds the utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign parameters, among others, to a URL. With them, Google Analytics and other analytics tools know which social network, email or ad each visit came from, so you can measure which campaign works best.
How do I create a UTM link step by step?
Paste the URL of the page you want to send people to, pick a channel shortcut (for example, Instagram or Email) or type the source and medium, and give the campaign a name. The UTM generator builds the link instantly and you copy it with one click. Term and content are optional.
What does each UTM parameter mean?
utm_source is the source: the site or network the visit comes from (instagram, newsletter, google). utm_medium is the medium or type of channel (social, email, cpc). utm_campaign is the campaign name (black-friday-2026). utm_term is for an ad keyword and utm_content is for telling apart two versions of the same ad or two buttons in the same email.
Why should UTM values be lowercase?
Because Google Analytics is case-sensitive: “Instagram” and “instagram” show up as two different sources and your data gets split. That is why the UTM generator turns everything into lowercase, removes accents and replaces spaces with hyphens, unless you turn that option off.
Which medium should I use so Google Analytics 4 groups the channel correctly?
Google Analytics 4 groups visits into channels based on the medium. Use “social” for organic social posts, “paid_social” for social ads, “email” for emails and “cpc” for search ads. If you use other names, visits may end up as “Unassigned”. The tool’s shortcuts already use these values.
Should I use UTM in Google Ads?
In Google Ads it is better to turn on auto-tagging, which adds the gclid parameter and sends Google Analytics more detail than UTM. Use UTM for every other channel: social media, emails, WhatsApp, Meta ads or links on other websites.
Should I use UTM on internal links on my site?
No. UTM parameters are for links that come from outside your site. If you use them on internal links, Google Analytics starts a new session and credits the visit to that campaign, which distorts your traffic source data.
Where can I see the results of my UTM links?
In Google Analytics 4 go to Reports › Acquisition › Traffic acquisition and switch the dimension to “Session source / medium” or “Session campaign”. To decide what to measure and how to read it, see our guide to marketing KPIs and the Data & Analytics section.
Is the UTM generator free?
Yes. The UTM generator is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser: the links you create are not sent to any server. The last five links you copy are saved only in your browser so you can find them quickly.
