Frequently asked questions about the VAT calculator
What is a VAT calculator?
A VAT calculator is a tool that splits a price into its net amount and its tax. You can use it to add VAT to a price before tax (for example, when issuing an invoice) or to remove it from a final price (for example, to see how much VAT you paid on a receipt).
What is the VAT rate in Chile?
Chile’s standard VAT rate (called IVA) is 19%. It is set by article 14 of Decree-Law 825, the Sales and Services Tax Law. Some transactions are exempt, such as certain health, education and passenger transport services.
How do I calculate VAT on a net amount?
Multiply the net amount by 0.19 to get the VAT, then add it to the net amount to get the total. For example, for CLP 100,000 net: VAT is CLP 19,000 and the total is CLP 119,000. That is the same as multiplying the net amount by 1.19. The VAT calculator does this in the “Add VAT” tab.
How do I remove VAT from a price that already includes it?
Divide the total price by 1.19 to get the net amount, then subtract it from the total to get the VAT. For example, a price of CLP 119,000 has a net amount of CLP 100,000 and VAT of CLP 19,000. A common mistake is taking 19% of the total: that gives CLP 22,610, more than the real VAT. Use the “Remove VAT” tab of the VAT calculator.
Do prices in Chile include VAT?
Yes. Prices shown to consumers, and the amounts on receipts (boletas), already include VAT. On invoices between businesses (facturas), the net amount, VAT and total are shown separately.
How is VAT rounded?
In Chile amounts are expressed in whole pesos, so the VAT calculator rounds to the nearest peso and adjusts the total so the net amount plus VAT always add up. If you need decimals, for example for amounts in dollars, turn off the “Round to whole units” option.
Can I use the calculator with a different rate?
Yes. Choose “Other rate” and enter the percentage you need, for example to calculate another country’s VAT. If you work with several currencies, also check our currency converter.
Is the VAT calculator free?
Yes. The VAT calculator is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser: the amounts are not sent to any server. The result is for reference only and does not replace advice from an accountant. Find more data and guides in the Finance section.
